Best destinations to play cricket overseas

Playing cricket abroad is the best way to see a country: you meet locals on equal terms, you get invited into clubhouses, and you come home with a scorecard as well as photos. These are the places we're building our cricket trips around.

UAE (October to April)

Short flights from India, reliable weather in the cooler months and proper facilities. Sharjah and Dubai have club cricket every weekend, and the pitches are true.

Sri Lanka (December to April on the west and south coasts)

Cricket is everywhere, and so are the beaches. A two-match series against a local club, then Galle Fort and Weligama, is hard to beat.

New Zealand (November to March)

Club grounds with mountains in the background, a strong club culture and international cricket in the same weeks. It's a long way, so we plan eight days or more.

South Africa (October to March)

Big grounds, hard pitches and SA20 in January and February. Add a club game or two and you have a classic PLAY + WATCH trip.

United Kingdom (May to September)

Village greens, county cricket and Lord's. The English summer is when club cricket is at its best.

Bhutan (spring and autumn)

Cricket in the Himalayas, against teams who are thrilled to have visitors. The Tiger's Nest hike makes a good rest day.
